Leaving the Netherlands checklist. Everything in the right order.

Deregistration, DigiD, insurance and your residence card – what to arrange and when.

8-month rule5 days beforeDigiDResidence card
Timeline

What to arrange – and when

Start early. Some steps take weeks, and a few can only be done while you still live here.

1

3 months before

Check your passport, activate the DigiD app with ID check, collect certificates and diplomas, and give notice on your rental contract.

2

1 month before

Tell your employer, health insurer, pension fund, UWV or SVB, and the Benefits Office. Stop your provisional tax assessment.

3

Your last week

Deregister at the municipality – at most 5 days before you leave. Give your new address abroad.

4

After you arrive

Register in your new country, update your address in the RNI and keep your proof of deregistration.

5

Within 1 year

Apply for voluntary AOW and Anw insurance if you want to keep building your state pension.

Deregistration

Leaving the municipal register (BRP)

When

You must deregister if

  • You will live abroad for more than 8 months within 12 months
  • You report it no earlier than 5 days before you leave
  • You give your new foreign address – or a contact address
  • You keep the deregistration certificate – many organisations ask for it
After

What happens next

  • You are registered in the RNI – your BSN stays the same
  • The municipality informs the IND for permit holders
  • Health insurance and allowances usually end
  • You can no longer activate a new DigiD – unless you are Dutch or from the EEA

Keep a copy of your deregistration certificate – the health insurer, the tax office and your bank will ask for it.

Residence permit holders

Three extra steps for permit holders

1

Deregister on time

The municipality informs the IND. You do not need to end your permit yourself.

2

Inform the IND if needed

Only if you did not deregister within 4 weeks after leaving, or if you hold an asylum permit.

3

Return your card

Make it invalid (cut a corner) and post it to IND Bureau Documenten, PO Box 49, 9560 AA Ter Apel.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens never need to inform the IND. Want to keep your permit? Read the permit rules first.

Practical

Everything else on your list

Passport and DigiD

Renew your passport and set up DigiD before you go – it is much harder from abroad.

Your home

Give notice on time. Selling or renting out? Check Box 3 rules for non-residents.

Car

Report the export to the RDW and check a partial BPM refund.

Insurance

End your Dutch health insurance with proof of deregistration – and arrange cover abroad.

Children

Inform the school, ask for school reports and check child benefit abroad.

Documents

Get apostilles and sworn translations for certificates you will need abroad.

Bank

Ask whether your bank keeps accounts for people living abroad.

Vote from abroad

Register as a voter abroad if you are Dutch and want to keep voting.

FAQ

Questions about the checklist

Can I deregister online?

Many municipalities offer it online with DigiD; others need a visit or a signed form. Check your municipality’s website.

What if I leave for 6 months?

Then you do not deregister – you stay registered at your Dutch address. Permit holders must still watch the main-residence rules.

Do I keep my BSN?

Yes. Your BSN stays the same and you are registered in the RNI as a non-resident.

Must I return my residence card?

Yes, if you are leaving for good. The card belongs to the Dutch government.
